Barney Frank takes online poker battle to the Tonight Show
Nobody in their right mind would argue that legalizing and regulating online poker hasn’t become Barney Frank’s (D-MA) pet project, but it was still a bit shocking to see him bring it up front and center on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. I’m willing to bet that a slew of online poker grinders, with the Tonight Show playing in the background, hit the “Sit Out” button and listened intently during the segment.
Frank is not really a poker advocate; it just happens that online poker lands squarely into two categories he is particularly interested in:
1. The tax revenue that can be generated by legalizing and regulating the industry –not to mention the licensing fees.
2. The fact that the government shouldn’t be getting involved with people’s privacy when they are not hurting others.
As Frank stated on the Tonight Show: “If you have some guy who wants to play poker on the Internet, we say it’s illegal. Why [anybody] thinks that’s the government’s business is beyond me. We could make billions of dollars a year by making it legal and taxing it.”
Unfortunately, Jay Leno doesn’t see it this way, and is against online gaming legislation –and as it turns out legalizing marijuana. Kudos to barney Frank for focusing on what seems a trivial issue to most, but actually has many ramifications for how the government intrudes into your life.
